Marshalls needs more options, says Lib Dem Council

December 11, 2004 12:02 AM

The government must find more options for the relocation of Marshall's airport, says the Lib Dem leader of Cambridge City Council. The Council hopes to redevelop the current airport site into thousands of new homes, easing the ever-increasing pressure on house prices in the city. But the government has blocked the aerospace company from moving to either Alconbury or Waterbeach airfields, as Defence Estates has its own development plans for these areas.

Ian Nimmo Smith, leader of the City Council, has urged John Prescott to instruct Defence Estates and the MoD to include these two sites as potential locations for Marshalls, alongside Duxford and Wyton, which are already under consideration. "The Labour government owes it to all those who can't afford to live in this city to help the company make a viable choice," he explained: "The airport site is vital for much-needed affordable housing and community facilities. It would be a seriously un-joined-up approach if the non-strategic speculative plans for Alconbury or Waterbeach blocked the way ahead for accessible and affordable housing in Cambridge.

"In view of the importance that John Prescott is giving to growth in the Cambridge sub-region, it is vital top level backing is given to allowing these additional sites to be considered. The government needs to get its act together."
