Frustration at health cuts secrecy

June 29, 2006 10:56 AM

Lib Dem member of the County Health Scrutiny Committee, Kevin Wilkins, has expressed his frustration as members of the public were denied access to details of the £37.7million of planned cuts agreed by PCTs today.

Coun Wilkins attended this morning's Board meeting of Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trusts which agreed a 'turnaround plan' involving significant cuts to health services in the area. Members of the public at the meeting were denied access to the full turnaround plan.

Coun Wilkins commented:

"By keeping its detailed plans secret, the PCT has got off to a very bad start. It will need to be much more open if it is going to persuade people that its plans are the best way out of this crisis."

David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, has today written to the Primary Care Trusts demanding a copy of the full proposals.

Coun Wilkins supported Mr. Howarth's call in the Cambridge Evening News today for greater public consultation on the proposals. At the moment there are only plans to consult on around 10% of the proposed savings.

Commenting, Coun Wilkins said:

"The public desperately wants to know what these changes will mean in practice and people must be given the chance to have their say."
