MP appalled at secret deal to increase train fares

David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, has expressed his shock at news released by The Times today which found that recent fare increases between Cambridge and London had been agreed in a secret meeting by Ministers last year.
Cheap day returns are no longer valid on First Capital Connect services from London to Cambridge between 4.30 and 7pm on weekdays. The Times revealed that this price hike, which is forcing many passengers to buy much more expensive standard tickets, was secretly agreed by the Department of Transport last year.
Mr. Howarth commented on the news:
"It is appalling that Ministers agreed this price hike in secret. This is not the only way to reduce overcrowding. The other, much better, solution would be to invest in state-of-the-art signalling technology that would increase the number of trains that could run on the Cambridge to London route."
