Nuclear safety fears lead to power plant closures

David Howarth, Lib Dem Energy Spokesperson, has raised concerns over the safety of nuclear power following the closure of 4 of Sweden's 10 nuclear power stations following a safety incident in Forsmark. Former Forsmark head Lars-Olov Hoeglund told journalists that "it was sheer luck that [the blackout] didn't lead to a catastrophe worse than Chernobyl".
Mr. Howarth commented:
"The shut-down in Sweden illustrates how difficult it is to make nuclear power safe. We need to be looking for a safer, greener and cheaper way to generate energy instead of returning to the mistakes of the past.
"A combination of renewable, decentralised energy and serious efforts to improve energy efficiency is the only way to tackle climate change. Nuclear power is just a distraction from the real solutions to the problems of energy security and climate change."
