Sustainable Communities Bill returns to Parliament

Lib Dems in Cambridge are supporting the adoption of the Sustainable Communities Bill as a Private Members Bill in Parliament.

The Bill's adoption following the Private Members' Bills ballot means that the Bill will now progress through Parliament as a Private Member's Bill.

David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, commented:

"Its great news that the Sustainable Communities Bill will be returning to Parliament. The Bill will, if passed, give local authorities the resources to create and enhance strong and sustainable communities with local facilities and shops.

"We've already lost local post-offices here in Cambridge, and the Government's plans suggest that we could lose more. Each time that we lose a Post Office or a local shop or service, significant damage is done to the local community. "

Councillor Ian Nimmo-Smith, Leader of Cambridge City Council, added:

"The Sustainable Communities Bill is a way to promote the viability of neighbourhoods that are under stress from the loss of Post Offices, local shops and dentists and doctors.

"As Cambridge continues to grow it is important that we support the development and maintenance of strong communities and neighbourhoods throughout the city, both the existing ones and the new ones in the growth areas."
