Hills Road flooding - action at last

January 31, 2007 3:31 PM

Lib Dem City Councillor for Queen Edith's, Alan Baker, is today celebrating success in a long-running battle to stop flooding on Hills Road in Cambridge.

For the past four years there has been recurrent serious flooding on Hills Road between Homerton Street and the entrance to Hills Road Sixth Form College. Councillor Baker has continually raised the issue with officers at the County Council and has now had news that the problem has been caused by a collapses pipe. The repair work is due to be carried out in April.

Councillor Baker commented:

"Local residents have been waiting over four years for this problem to be fixed. On occasions the pool of water has extended more than 50m along the road and at least 3m from the foot-way into the road.

"Frequently flooding has covered the footpath in front of the shops and the St John's Post Office. At times it has made the pedestrian crossing outside the Post Office impassable and the cycle-way on Hills Road unusable.

"I am very relieved that the County Council has finally acted and discovered the cause of the floods. We've been waiting far too long for action."
