Nuclear power will hold back renewables

March 14, 2007 10:00 AM

David Howarth, Lib Dem Energy Spokesperson, has asked the Prime Minister whether nuclear power will get in the way of renewable energy targets.

Mr. Howarth's question followed the EU agreement to take into account individual countries' energy mix, including their use of nuclear power, when drawing up individual targets to meet the Europe-wide target of 20% renewable energy by 2020.

Mr. Howarth commented:

"One of the real dangers of new nuclear power is that it draws attention and investment away from renewable sources of energy and reduced energy consumption.

"The decision last week to take into account use of nuclear power when setting individual renewable energy targets, is therefore extremely worrying. This is what campaigners have been afraid of. The 20% renewable energy target should be a bold and challenging one that stimulates the use of renewable energy sources but it won't succeed if countries are allowed to reduce their target because of their reliance on nuclear power."
