No end in sight for hated council tax

Cambridge MP, David Howarth, has condemned a Government report proposing to keep a tax which hits the poorest hardest.
The Lyons review into local government funding, which was published today, proposed changes to the Council Tax but missed the opportunity to replace the tax with a Local Income Tax based on ability to pay.

"The Council Tax is incredibly unfair. There are people in Cambridge who are paying over 10% of their entire income in Council Tax. Tweaking the current system will not help those who are struggling to pay their Council Tax bill this April.
"This is a wasted opportunity to replace the hated Council Tax with a fairer system based on ability to pay, a local income tax."
Leader of Cambridge City Council, Ian Nimmo-Smith, added:
"After three years the Lyons review is just recommending tinkering at the edges of a hated tax. I am very disappointed that the Government has yet again failed to take the steps needed to ensure fair funding for local services."
