David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, is calling for a major parliamentary inquiry into a £40 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia. The Serious Fraud Office's investigation into the Al Yamamah deal was dropped last year after the Prime Minister warned that it was risking national security.
Mr Howarth questioned Leader of the House, Jack Straw, yesterday over the supposed threat to national security. He commented:
"We now discover that the threat to national security which lead to the end of the first investigation into the Al Yamamah deal was that those who were being investigated may stop cooperating with us.
"The British Government should not be giving in to that type of pressure. This is simply shameful."
