Defend Freedom of Information - Howarth

June 13, 2007 12:40 PM

David Howarth, MP for Cambridge, has called for the extension of the Freedom of Information Act.

Mr Howarth is backing a private members bill today to extend the Freedom of Information Act to 'public sector contractors' and end Government minister's veto on releasing information to the public. The bill would also make it more difficult for the Government to increase fees for Freedom of Information requests without debate in Parliament.

David commented:

"The Freedom of Information Act is under attack and we need to defend the public's right to information about public bodies. We need to fight proposals to exempt MPs from the Freedom of Information Act and we need to make it more difficult for the Government to place additional restrictions on Freedom of Information.

"If passed, this Bill would prevent Ministers from vetoing freedom of information demands by the Information Commissioner and would mean any changes in Freedom of Information fees could be properly debated in the House of Commons."
