Area committee finds cash for blind path

A tactile passageway for the blind is to be built in Queen Edith's following a local resident's concerns.

At South Area Committee last week the City Council agreed to fund tactile paving for a passageway between Holbrook and Glebe Roads, which will enable blind people to distinguish this passageway from others in the two streets and so use it to avoid Hills Road. A Holbrook Road resident raised the matter at the committee and was supported by her local Lib Dem Councillor Amanda Taylor.

Councillor Taylor commented:

"I am very pleased that the Area Committee will be funding a tactile pathway for the blind between Holbrook and Glebe Roads. Blind residents have been very concerned since the County Council, which maintains pavements, have refused to fund the tactile passageway.

"The passageway is a gateway to other services and amenities in the area, such as the Rock Road Library. These improvements should make the route much safer for blind residents but allowing them to use the passageway to avoid the ever busy and loud Hills Road and its junctions which present their own challenges to the blind."

South Area Committee will be creating the tactile passageway using Environmental Improvements funds delegated to areas by Cambridge City Council.
