Don't ignore aviation in Climate Change Bill

Cambridge MP, David Howarth, has called in Parliament for international aviation to be included in the Climate Change Bill.

David spoke during the debate on the Queen's Speech in the House of Commons last week. He commented:

"Climate change is the greatest new political problem to have arisen in our lifetimes and the stakes are the highest possible.

"I'm very pleased that the Government has listened to campaigners, including many from Cambridge, and is introducing a Climate Change Bill. However it is imperative that this bill is tough enough to make the real cuts in greenhouse gas emissions that we need to tackle climate change.

"We need to see a higher target of an 80% cut in greenhouse emissions by 2050; the latest scientific evidence suggests that a 60% cut is just not enough. This target must include all greenhouse gases not just carbon dioxide.

"International aviation and shipping are expected to add at least 25% to our greenhouse gas emissions yet the Government is currently excluding them from the Climate Change Bill. We need to set targets to reduce emission from aviation and we need to start now. We cannot afford to wait."
