BROOKFIELDS HOSPITAL FIRST BATTLE WON - HOWARTH

David Howarth, MP, has welcomed the decision by the the Primary Care Trust to look again at plans to close Brookfields Hospital in Cambridge.

Mr Howarth commented:

"I have always said Brookfields Hospital is a valuable resource for the whole of Cambridge providing excellent care for people needing in-patient rehabilitation and specialist continuing care.

"I congratulate COPE (Cambridge Older People's Enterprise) and the thousands of people who signed the petition to show just how concerned people in Cambridge were about plans to close Brookfields.

"However, getting these plans on the table for Brookfields is only a first step. They contain inconsistencies and need significant improvement before they could be implemented.

"Although I am pleased that the plan no longer means that existing continuing care patients will be made to leave, it still means that future patients will be denied the excellent level of care that Brookfields has provided.

"I am pleased that new options for the future of the hospital are being considered but I will not be happy until the issue of closure has been left out."
