NO TO MORE NUCLEAR POWER STATIONS - HOWARTH

David Howarth, MP, has said the Government's announcement today that it is to build more nuclear power stations is a "serious mistake".

Mr Howarth said: "The Government's statement is a serious mistake, one that we will all end up regretting. Nuclear power has always promised far more than it has delivered. Its history is one of delay, expense, subsidy and toxic waste, and I see no reason why its future will be any different.

"It follows a sham consultation in which the government had made up its mind before it started.

"The Government has at least now admitted that nuclear power cannot provide the electricity the country needs before 2020, but the key question now, which the government is dodging, is how to fill the expected electricity generation gap in ways that minimise environmental damage.

"Nuclear is an expensive distraction which will harm investment in greener forms of energy and energy saving.

"It is hugely disappointing that the government favours nuclear in the long term over newer technologies like carbon capture and wind and wave power."

End.
