MP SPEAKS OUT AGAINST LOCAL GOVERNMENT FINANCE SETTLEMENT - HOWARTH

February 4, 2008 6:32 PM

Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge David Howarth has denounced the Local Government Finance Settlement and described it as insufficient and unfair.

The Government is planning to increase the grant to the City Council by only 1% for 2008-09 and merely 0.5% in 2009-10 and 2010-11. With inflation estimated at over 2%, this so-called rise of government funding will cut the level of services which Cambridge residents receive.

David Howarth MP commented:

"I am shocked by the Government's behaviour towards Cambridge. Despite claiming to help, the Government is depriving the city of its fair share of funding.

"This comes on top of the unfair way the Government is funding free bus fares for the elderly. Although the scheme is a good one, the Government is providing only £600,000 for a scheme which costs £1.5 million and is expecting Cambridge tax payers to fork out the rest of the money."
