CAMBRIDGESHIRE LIB DEMS WELCOME NICK CLEGG'S SUPPORT - CITY/COUNTY

February 12, 2008 11:18 AM

Cambridgeshire Lib Dem members welcomed Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg's statement on road pricing and public transport improvements.

Lib Dem members in Cambridge have repeatedly called for real measures to reduce traffic in the city. However, they strongly oppose plans which would not provide efficient public transport alternatives in advance of any road pricing scheme.

David Howarth MP, Councillor Ian Nimmo-Smith, leader of Cambridge City Council and Lib Dem group leader David Jenkins at County Council issued a joint statement saying:

"Massive public transport improvements must be in place before any congestion charge. We need a complete public transport system for Cambridge that provides regular, reliable services that Cambridge residents as well as visitors and workers can use.

"We need a real alternative to using the car."
