Congratulations to Coleridge Community School - HOWARTH

David Howarth, the Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge, has today congratulated staff and pupils at Coleridge Community School for its improved GCSE results.

30 per cent of students at Coleridge have gained higher level grades at GCSE, three years after the school was put on special measures.

Coleridge is now part of a Federation with Parkside Community College and managed by Principal Andrew Hutchinson who oversees both schools, with a third primary school about to join the Federation shortly.

David Howarth MP said: "The GCSE results at Coleridge are good news for students, good news for staff, and good news for the City. It never made sense for the government to threaten Coleridge with closure. It clearly needed better management and improved teaching.

"The Principal Andrew Hutchinson has improved results and has worked hard, I congratulate him and the staff. The concept of a Federation between high achieving schools and those performing less well is clearly working.

"However, it shows that New Labour's centrally driven education system is not what is needed. This is a successful Federation because it was a local answer to a local problem, but Federations imposed by Central government are less likely to work."
