MP fights on to save threatened post offices

October 6, 2008 11:43 AM

Cambridge MP David Howarth has accused the Post Office of failing to take into account his concerns when making its decision to shut three city branches.

He has urged the Post Office to address the issues he raised before giving its final verdict on the future of branches at Regent Street, Trumpington Street and the St. John's Post Office.

Mr Howarth had argued in an original letter to the Post office that it was unacceptable for the consultation period on the closures to be held outside university term time.

"The Post Office's own closure proposal document states that 'the city of Cambridge is a historic university town' but subsequently takes no notice of this," he says in his latest letter to Laura Tarling, Post Office network development manager.

"Putting documents on the university's website is not an adequate response. How many students look at the university website in August?"

Mr Howarth also questions the Post Office's claim that there is an alternative service for the customers of the Trumpington Street branch at 7am and on Sundays.

And he claims it is unacceptable that Post Office Ltd imposes restrictions on the services offers by postmasters who accept redundancy.

"This will threaten the viability of the shops themselves and will be a significant disadvantage to customers," he says.

David Howarth"I note with dismay that none of these points, although surely relevant considerations, were mentioned in the document and I can only conclude that they were not take into account by the Post Office in making these decisions."
