MP takes part in liberty debate

February 24, 2009 10:22 AM

No2ID logoFundamental freedoms will be debated at the Cambridge Union on Saturday as part of the nationwide "Convention on Modern Liberty".

Debate on the motion "This House believes that its civil liberties are under grave threat" promises to be intense.

David Howarth Cambridge MP and Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Justice will be taking part.

He said said: "I welcome the opportunity to take part in the convention and, once again, defend our basic rights and freedoms, which are under threat from a government that forgets that the British state belongs to the British people and not the other way round.

"People strongly oppose Big Brother societies which can track people through databases and ID cards and we should do everything in our power to prevent our privacy being eroded in this way."

Also taking part will be Bill Rammell MP (Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs); Tariq Sadiq (Labour Parliamentary Spokesperson for South Cambridgeshire) and Prof. Andrew Gamble (Professor of Politics, University of Cambridge)

The debate is the centrepiece of a day-long programme of public talks and panel discussions on topics including internet censorship, the database state, eGovernment and communications privacy. Experts and politicians from across the political spectrum will speak at the event, which will include live televised talks from London by Shami Chakrabarti of Liberty and the author Philip Pullman.
