Call for VAT cut to help home owners backed by MP

A call to cut VAT to five per cent on home repairs and improvements has been backed by Cambridge MP David Howarth.
He believes that the move, called for by the Federation of Master Builders, could help UK home owners who cannot afford vital repairs to their homes.
"It is essential that people repair and improve their homes but, in the present economic climate, it can be difficult to find the money to do so," he said. "A reduction in VAT would certainly help and I would urge the government to introduce this move at the earliest possible opportunity."
Mr Howarth has signed a Commons' motion which supports the VAT reduction and claims it could make it easier for people to make energy efficient repairs and improvements to their homes.
"With buildings responsible for 40 per cent of the UK's total carbon emissions, this measure would go some way in helping the government to meet its target of a 60 per cent. reduction in UK carbon emissions by 2050," the motion says.
