MP learns the art of shopping

August 18, 2009 11:17 AM

David Howarth and bannerMP David Howarth will learn how shop window art is transforming the city's retail landscape on Friday afternoon (August 21).

He has been invited to see first hand how the pioneering new initiative, Changing Spaces, is providing opportunities for artists to display their work in empty shops while at the same time advertising the fact that shops are to let.

Mr Howarth will be joined by Cambridge Market Ward Councillor Colin Rosenstiel.

The initiative has been developed by Cambridge City Council in partnership with Love Cambridge and art exhibitions are changed on a fortnightly basis until shops are let to new tenants.

Local charities are also being invited to take part in a six week scheme allowing them to move into certain empty shop units.

Mr Howarth said: "This is an extremely worthwhile project which, not only supports local artists but also breathes new life into the city centre during these difficult economic times.

"It is an excellent idea to draw attention to the opportunities available for businesses looking to move into the city and hopefully very soon these shops will attract some new names."
