Howarth calls for charity support this Christmas

December 22, 2009 10:26 AM

David HowarthMP David Howarth has called on Cambridge residents to give generously this Christmas and support local charities.

He is backing the Fundraising Standards Board's Give with Confidence campaign which has been launched following a nationwide fall in donations to charities over the past year.

Mr Howarth said: "Charities provide such vital services to residents across Cambridge and we need to do what we can to ensure that these organisations are supported through difficult times.

"Christmas is traditionally a time for giving to charitable causes and I hope that those who can will act now to support the charities close to their heart."

Cambridge charities, DHIVERSE, Camread, Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust, the Relationships Foundation, Cambridge Money Advice Centre and Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust are all members of the Fundraising Standards Board.

"It has been an incredibly tough year for UK charities," adds Alistair McLean, Chief Executive of the Fundraising Standards Board. "Donations have dropped by as much as 11 per cent on last year and yet charitable services are more in demand than ever before.

"Fundraisers across the country are doing a fantastic job in raising money during such difficult times. But, our members report there is greater need that remains unmet."
