A flagship scheme to protect cyclists riding along Cambridge's Riverside will be backed by councillors tomorrow (Tuesday).

The £577,000 project is part of a long term vision to create a pedestrian and cycling priority route linking Stourbridge Common and Midsummer Common.

It will be funded by Cambridge City Council through its cycle budget, Section 106 money and the area committees and will be backed by members of the council's Environment Scrutiny Committee.

Cambridge City Executive Councillor for Change and Growth, Sian Reid said: "This scheme is designed to reduce the conflict between cyclists and drivers at the junction of Abbey Road and Riverside by improving the road layout.Cars will not be able to access the Riverside at this point and visitor parking will be reduced and relocated.

"This is the beginning of an exciting project which will give greater protection to both pedestrians and cyclists travelling between two of the city's open spaces."

Work will be carried out on a 200 metre stretch between Stourbridge Common and Priory Road and will include using new road surface material, landscaping and upgraded and safer lighting.
