Howarth urges residents to seek help as freeze continues

January 14, 2010 2:45 PM

Home Heat Helpline logoMP David Howarth has expressed concerns that families, the elderly and the disabled across Cambridge could be missing out on help with their energy bills as the freezing weather looks set to continue.

He has urged residents to get in touch with the Home Heat Helpline to see whether they could get help to stay warm and manage their energy costs.

The free-phone helpline provides vulnerable customers with direct access to free insulation and reduced or social tariffs from their energy supplier and some people have saved up to £250 per year.

Mr Howarth said: "This long spell of freezing weather makes it extremely hard for people on low incomes. They worry about how they will pay for the extra heating they are using and there is a danger they will not heat their homes properly as a result.

"But there is help out there for vulnerable people and it costs nothing to phone the Home Heat Helpline to find out what is available. I would urge anyone worried about how they will afford their energy costs to get in touch with the helpline urgently."

The Home Heat Helpline can be contacted on 0800 336699.
