Huppert fights to clear DNA database of innocent people

Julian Huppert, Parliamentary Candidate for Cambridge is fighting to get the names of innocent people removed from the government's DNA database.
He is offering to take up the cases of all those Cambridge residents who have their DNA held on the database even though they have never been convicted of an offence.
Julian will be holding a DNA drop-in surgery at the Cambridge Liberal Democrats' office at 16 Signet Court, Cambridge on Saturday, March 6 from 10am to 12 noon.
He promises to take up residents' cases with Cambridgeshire Police Chief Constable, Julie Spence in a bid to get their DNA removed.
Julian, a member of the National Council of Liberty, said: "Police forces across the country are holding permanently the DNA of innocent people despite a landmark case in the European Court of Human Rights which made it illegal to do so.
"This is totally unacceptable. There are 5.6 million records on the DNA database and thousands of them are from people who have never been convicted of offence and in some cases, have not even been charged.
"This makes the assumption that people arrested or who have volunteered to help the police through process of elimination are more likely to commit an offence than others.
"I urge Cambridge residents who find themselves in this position with their DNA held illegally to come to my surgery so that I can fight for justice on their behalf."
