• Cambridge City Council is flying the St George's Cross flag above the Guildhall today (Sunday, June 27) for the England football team in its crucial game against Germany.

• The World Cup is an opportunity for local communities of all backgrounds to come together in support of football/

• The city council is a key supporter of all forms of sport across Cambridge. This support ranges from the provision of sporting facilities such as the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, to promoting sport development in general

• Councillor Rod Cantrill, Executive Councillor for Arts & Recreation commented: "We all have our fingers crossed that the England football team will be successful in their game against Germany this afternoon.

"Many residents are involved in football at various levels within the city either as participants, organisers or supporters and this also provides an opportunity to recognise their contribution to Cambridge life.

"The football World Cup also provides an opportunity to celebrate not only football but also the wide range of sport provision that takes place across Cambridge, with many of the activities provided on a voluntary basis and targeted towards the young of the city."
