Gracinda's campaign against climate change backed by MP

August 20, 2010 10:45 AM

Julian HuppertA Cambridge student has gained the support of MP Julian Huppert for her campaign to protect the environment.

Gracinda Colaco, 20, is pushing for stronger European policies to protect against climate change.

She attended the European Youth Conference on Biodiversity in Belgium recently, joining 150 young Europeans from 35 different countries.

The conference in Geel gave the young people the chance to learn and share knowledge about biodiversity and marked the International Year of Biodiversity.

Fifteen of the young delegates presented a declaration calling for action to Janez Potocnik, the European Commissioner for the Environment.

"It was a beautiful event," said Gracinda. "One hundred and fifty people waited for Mr Potocnik outside the European Commission holding green helium balloons with photos of different species attached to symbolise the danger of biodiversity escaping from us.

"Now that we are back in our countries we are all getting to work trying to spread this declaration."

Gracinda, who is studying Maths at Durham University, works as a healthcare assistant at Cambridge's Addenbrooke's Hospital during the holidays.

Julian has welcomed the opportunity to back the campaign and promised to do all he can to put pressure on the government.

He said: "I was really enthused about Gracinda's description of the event and what it symbolised. I am passionate about the environment and one of my main aims as an MP is to put as much pressure as I can on government to take decisive action on climate change before it's too late.

"This is one of the most serious threats the world has faced and we have to act now. To sit back and do nothing and allow other generations to pay for our mistakes is wholly unacceptable."
