Huppert calls for investigation into phone hacking

September 7, 2010 12:20 PM

Julian at WestminsterCambridge MP Julian Huppert has called on Parliament's Home Affairs Select Committee to investigate the police handling of the phone hacking saga.

He fears that the initial investigation into phone tapping by the News of the World was not conducted properly.

Julian has urged Keith Vaz, committee chairman, to look into the issue and plans to question Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner, John Yates today (Tuesday) at the committee meeting.

"There is a suggestion that the police may not have properly executed their functions in that initial investigation," he told Mr Vaz in a letter.

"It's a matter of national concern if the public does not have confidence in the police's ability to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation."

Julian said later: "Clearly there is an issue here. The initial investigation by the police three years ago led to the jailing of the News of the World's royal editor but may not have gone far enough.

"It is crucial that the police handling of this case is scrutinised at the earliest opportunity to restore public confidence, only then will we be able to determine the full extent of this case."
