A Street Champion scheme is to be piloted by the Liberal Democrat-led Cambridge City Council in a bid to clean up litter from the city's residential streets.
The project will work in partnership with groups like Keep Britain tidy and be rolled out across the city to encourage people to reduce litter.
The Street Champion will work with the City Rangers and recruit volunteers to encourage their communities to look after their streets.
Cambridge City Executive Councillor for Environment and Waste Services, Jean Swanson said: "There have been concerns about littering in the city and the matter was raised at our North Area Committee. We hope the Street Champion scheme will encourage people to take responsibility for keeping their communities free of rubbish.
"We hope that by getting rid of litter where they live people will be helping to make a better environment for everyone.
"The council has allowed £30,000 for the part-time Street Champion's post over two years and extended its Recycling Champion's funding for a further two years."
