Huppert backs campaign for Arms Trade Treaty

June 11, 2012 10:56 AM

Julian HuppertJulian Huppert MP will join the Amnesty International Cambridge City group on Saturday 16th June to show support for an effective Arms Trade Treaty. Cambridge World Development Movement, Cambridge Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Cambridge Oxfam, Menelik Education and Cambridge Stop the War Coalition will also join the campaign action.

Millions of people are killed, injured, raped, repressed and forced to flee their homes every year as a result of the irresponsible and poorly regulated arms trade. The world needs a strong Arms Trade Treaty that will prevent arms transfers if they are likely to contribute directly to serious human rights abuses or poverty. The Treaty must cover all conventional arms.

After years and years of campaigning by many organisations including Amnesty, this July, world leaders will meet in New York to draw up an historic document: the first ever international Arms Trade Treaty.

Julian Huppert MP says: "I am delighted to give my support for a strong Arms Trade Treaty. We need strict regulation of the international arms trade if we are to prevent human rights abuses. This treaty, which would ensure responsible transfer of arms and prevent the suffering of millions of people across the world, is long overdue."

Liesbeth ten Ham, chair of the Amnesty International Cambridge City group says: "We are on the verge of a real breakthrough in Human Rights' history. A robust Arms Trade Treaty can keep arms out of the wrong hands and prevent the kind of atrocities involving millions of ordinary people we have witnessed across the world. Therefore Cambridge City Amnesty International group together with Julian Huppert MP and other Cambridge NGOs are calling upon the UK government to commit to championing an effective Arms Trade Treaty."

The campaign action will start at 11.30am at Market Square in front of the Town Hall.
