Cambridge councillor, Ian Manning is pushing for a solution to the traffic problems on the city's Fen Road to be included in the county's new transport strategy.
Cllr Manning, who represents East Chesterton on Cambridgeshire County Council wants to see a Chesterton Fen access road included in the strategy.
The road would allow traffic to access the travellers' site and industrial units on Fen Road and leave at the South Cambs end without driving through the residential streets of East Chesterton.
Cllr Manning has urged residents to support the move by attending the county council's exhibition on the transport strategy and stating the need for the road in the consultation.
"This access road is desperately needed if we are to solve the problems faced for years by the residents of Fen Road," said Cllr Manning. "They have suffered from heavy goods vehicles travelling past their homes and have had to put up with speeding drivers.
"It is time the county council acted to solve these problems and this transport strategy could be the answer. I am urging residents to take part in this consultation so that the county council will be in no doubt as to need for this road and the strength of feeling on this issue."
The county council is putting its transport strategy on display on Tuesday, July 10 at Brownsfields Youth and Community Centre from 3pm to 8pm.
And residents can take part in the consultation on line by going to: http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/transport/strategies/currenttransportplans/Transport+Strategy+for+Cambridge+and+South+Cambridgeshire.htm
Cllr Manning started the process to find a solution to the traffic problems when he wrote a paper on the subject last November.
His initial suggestions resulted in the issue going before Cambridge City Council's North Area Committee and a Fen Road working party was set up to explore the possibilities.
