Liberal Democrats in Cambridge are celebrating victory in last week's City Council elections. The Party easily held on to the 10 city council seats that were up for re-election and made a historic gain in traditionally Labour King's Hedges.

Cllr Ian Nimmo-Smith, Leader of Cambridge City Council, commented:

"We're really pleased with this ringing endorsement of our policies in Cambridge. It shows that the citizens support our efforts to reduce Cambridge's contribution to climate change and to improve the city's recycling rate. We will continue to work hard for the citizens of Cambridge to make the city a safer, fairer, greener place to live and work."

Newly elected Liberal Democrat Councillor for King's Hedges, Neale Upstone, added:

"King's Hedges has been represented by the Labour party since the ward was created and so I'm very pleased with this result. As the new Liberal Democrat City Councillor for King's Hedges I will be committed to fighting for fairness. I will fight to get a fair deal for local residents from the Government. I want to see us able to spend more money on council housing and see residents taxed more fairly. I will be an active local councillor for King's Hedges who won't take the area or its residents for granted."
