Lib Dems push for freeze on councillors' pay11.30.17am GMT Thu 5th Feb 2009
Cambridge Liberal Democrats are pushing for councillors' pay to be frozen. They want no increase in allowances this year and are urging other members of Cambridge City Council to back their decision. The call, which would save around £7,300, comes despite the fact that national research has proved that councillor allowances in Cambridge are among the lowest in the country. "At a time when people are feeling the pinch, tightening their belts and worrying about their finances, we didn't feel it would be appropriate to grant ourselves any pay rise," said city council leader, Ian Nimmo-Smith. The Statutory Independent Panel, which makes recommendations on the allowances, has repeatedly called for them to be significantly increased. Cllr Nimmo-Smith added: "Some councillors forego significant amounts of pay from their regular jobs in order to perform their duties and the allowances do not really compensate. "It was decided, however, that allowances should remain unchanged this year at a time when we have to make other budget savings to cope with the economic downturn."
