Cambridge's De Freville area is to be given Conservation Area status to protect its special character.

The move follows support from residents and the Cambridge Preservation Society keen to safeguard this area of architectural and historical interest.

Cambridge City Council is spending £90,000 over three years on pro-active conservation work in the city.

Conservation Area status allows for tighter controls on planning to protect and enhance the area.

Executive Councillor for Change and Growth, Sian Reid said: "Residents on the whole supported Conservation Area status. Some felt, however, that it would prevent change in the area; but, In point of fact, designating it as a Conservation Area would allow us to manage change better.

"This is an historical site in the city with many fine buildings of architectural importance and we want to do everything in our power to make sure its character is protected."
