‘I’M HUSTINGS READY’ - CITY LIB DEM CANDIDATE
General Election Lib Dem Cheney Payne will attend any fairly managed hustings in Cambridge
Following the Labour candidate Daniel Zeichner's statement that he will not be attending hustings due to safety concerns, Liberal Democrat Cheney Payne has confirmed her commitment to ensuring that Cambridge still has an opportunity to question their next MP.
Cheney said: “I am very happy to speak to the people of Cambridge in any fairly managed forum that I can talk about my plans to get a fair deal for our city as our MP.”
“I welcome the opportunity to talk about my priorities – standing up for Cambridge’s schools, fixing our NHS and care services, and rebuilding our relationship with Europe.”
“I am, of course, greatly concerned about ensuring that our politics are conducted in a safe and civil way. As a woman in politics, I know firsthand how nasty and threatening some people can be.”
“However, there are measures that can be taken to ensure we can balance the safety of candidates and ensuring residents have the opportunity to hold us to account. Since the pandemic, we are all much more comfortable having online meetings and any candidates who are worried about attending events in person should be able to appear online.”
“I look forward to speaking to residents throughout the campaign and I hope we can find a path forward to protect our city's tradition of open, robust hustings.”
