Liberal Democrat Responses to the Questionnaire from Cambridgeshire Families for Sustainable Travel
Due to the fact that Cambridgeshire Families for Sustainable Travel were only willing to publish yes-no answers to their questions Liberal Democrat Candidates in the City Council Elections are publishing their full responses separately, because in some situations context and recognition of implications are important.
- Do you agree children's safety should be prioritised over the convenience of motorists? Y/N
YES. Safety including children is the priority we would expect in all decisions relating to highway matters, and we don’t see that as in general opposition to any particular type of road user.
- To create safe routes to nurseries and schools will you:
- Support School Streets for all that would like them? Y/N
YES, recognising any impacts on neighbouring streets and mitigating for them.
- Prioritise safer footways, cycleways, and crossings over space for cars? Y/N
YES. We want to see more people opt for walking, wheeling and public transport, as set out in our response to the manifesto of the Sustainable Transport Alliance of which your organisation is a part (https://www.cambridgelibdems.org.uk/news/article/cambridge-lib-dem-response-to-sustainable-travel-alliance-manifesto) and this will need more and safer space for them. Use of cars will still be necessary, although hopefully at a lower level, and we would want both to co-exist under safe conditions.
- Support the introduction of more 20mph speed limits? Y/N
YES. This is the approach of the Lib Dem-led County Council, where it is appropriate.
- Support measures to enforce a ban on pavement parking? Y/N
YES. We will continue to advocate for the availability of effective local enforcement powers and their use to increase safety and reduce nuisance. Where pavement parking has historically been explicitly formalised in a few parts of the city, there would need to be neighbourhood discussion about whether and how to proceed.
