SAVE CITY CENTRE SOCIAL HOUSING

Stanton House is a city council sheltered housing scheme in Christchurch Street, Cambridge.  The site has been in continuous use for social housing for nearly 200 years, having previously been a Victorian women’s refuge.  The Kite area is a historically diverse part of the city. Although the current 1960s building needs updating to modern standards, the council is considering selling it off for a private development rather than replacing it. A decision about this is expected in July. The mainly elderly Stanton House residents praise its accessibility to shops and services, its proximity to the traffic-free area, the ease of managing without transport and the integration with the surrounding community.

Save City Centre Social Housing

We call on Cambridge City Council to retain the Stanton House site in use for social housing and to refurbish or redevelop the current accommodation to enable future social tenants continued access to this convenient and welcoming central location and reject other options which would increase gentrification of the Kite area of the city.
